New swine nucleus farm invests in the future

Hypor’s new nucleus farm is known as Bon Accord, named for the municipality in Saskatchewan where it is located. The name also translates to “good agreement”, a fitting name for a facility that brings together biosecurity, R&D, and operational efficiency in perfect harmony.

Accurate measures in feed efficiency and behavior

This farrow-to-finish operation with 1200 pure lines sows offers the best of everything. To start, it features leading technology in measuring feed consumption and efficiency. For example, the facility records lactation feed intake at farrowing and gestation feed intake.

There is also the ability to feed multiple rations at different stages with the option of blending. Thanks to the latest in automation, data is collected in real time, and team members can tightly control and monitor feed intake, feeding behavior, frequency and the weight of the sow in gestation. With this information, our breeding program can make more accurate selection for feed conversion ratio. The group housing system also allows us to capture more data on behavior and traits related to livability.

Operational Excellence

No matter the conditions outside, the pigs in Bon Accord will be kept comfortable. Environmental controls are tightly controlled as the farm was built to accurately manage air quality, temperature, and ventilation. In keeping with Hypor’s focus on the future for welfare standards, the barn embraces pen gestation with loose sow gestation pens and modern farrowing crates.

Biosecure

In terms of biosecurity, Bon Accord was set up for enhanced biosecurity. Its remote location decreases the risk of contamination from outside sources including feed mills, slaughterhouses, or other farms. The farm is also protected by a strong biosecurity program with protocols involving receiving shipments, visitors, and personal sanitation.

This investment is a great example of building a facility with high quality in mind for every detail. From the technologies used for maintaining a clean, welfare friendly environment, to the standard operating procedures used inside the facility, to the data collected on the farm, everything has been executed with the best in mind. With all of these things in place, observers can agree that this farm is a solid investment in the future of the pork production chain.
